POSTION PURPOSE:

Bonneville Seattle is looking for someone who will provide vision, direction and guidance for all KIRO radio programming and content development, including news and personality-driven talk shows.  They will work closely with performing talent to maximize their performance and that of the product.  They will also work with radio and digital teams to ensure product components (digital, news, talk) complement one another.  The Program Director will meet the company's goals by delivering the highest degree of community service; maximizing Nielsen ratings and digital audience metrics; supporting the company's sales and finance teams; and responsibly managing the company's resources.

The Program Director will also create, implement, and manage the sound, the brand, and the standards of KIRO Radio through all distribution points in order to reach and exceed goals for ratings, revenue, and profitability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Articulate a clear and compelling product vision, direction, and strategy for KIRO-FM, in order to help all employees to understand the direction and their individual roles in creating success.
  1. Partner with VP/Market Manager to establish KIRO-FM programming strategy, determine tactical plans, and achieve performance goals.
  1. Select, hire, coach, develop, appraise and direct KIRO-FM programming personnel in a manner that helps them maximize their potential and their contribution to the company and our platforms.
  1. Work closely with all parts of the company's operations, including sales, administration, digital media, sister broadcast stations and corporate functions, so that the station makes a full contribution to the company's success.
  1. Maintain quality control and presentation consistency for all KIRO-branded content. Ensure full compliance with FCC guidelines and company standards.
  1. Serve as chief steward of the KIRO-FM brand and each individual program brand, making sure that the brands are properly represented and protected in all on-air and off-air content, marketing, appearances, promotions, social media, and other touch-points with the customer.
  1. Respond to listener and customer feedback in a timely and professional manner. Ensure that the FCC Public Files are maintained to company standards.
  1. Establish annual operating budgets, and ensure that the programming and news operations for KIRO FM function within budget and in accordance with company policies and federal, state and local laws.
  1. Work in partnership with engineering, IT, digital media teams and other resources to advance the gathering, distribution and presentation of the KIRO FM product using emerging technologies.
  1. Other responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) + years in media content programming, production, journalism
  • Proven experience in building top performing media properties
  • Proven experience in coaching and development of team
  • Have excellent knowledge of Nielsen methodology, reporting and resources.
  • Thorough knowledge of radio broadcasting in general.
  • Thorough knowledge of journalism techniques, ethics and legal issues
  • Thorough knowledge of FCC regulations
  • Ability to provide direction, organization, creativity and strategy regarding the talent, promotions and production necessary to produce a marketable and sellable radio station and brand.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and skills in the use of digital tools.
  • Ability to guide development of station promotions and contesting, web promotions and sales promotions, working with appropriate departments to maintain quality and legal standards.
  • Able to foster positive working relationships and achieve cooperation and collaboration amongst staff and externally with partners/vendors.
  • Able to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in the use of social media, and ensure that the station's staff and shows make effective use of social media in keeping with Company's best practices and policies.
  • Prefer bachelor degree in communications, journalism or related field or equivalent experience as well as broadcast news media experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.
  • Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
