The Anchor position at KIRO Radio is a multidimensional and demanding position that requires the proven skill to enterprise stories, seek out and interview relevant individuals, edit audio and then write compelling, factual, grammatically correct, and ready-for-air news copy. Those stories are then delivered as the public voice of the newsroom. In addition, an Anchor may be asked to work outside of the newscasts to produce long-form reports or features to be utilized on KIRO Radio's news/talk shows. Anchors are expected to adhere to strict journalistic standards. This position works closely with News Editors and, as a team, shares the same goal of delivering timely, engaging, and audience-centered news content. Anchors are also expected to maintain professional social media accounts.


  • News content production; including but not limited to enterprise stories, audio editing, writing and copy editing.
  • Write and hone newscasts every 30 minutes while ensuring ensure editorial, creative and technical excellence.
  • Track the ongoing flow of daily news while maintaining the organization and relevance of news copy in the work file.
  • Work quickly and efficiently alone or in a team; must be able to respond aggressively and self-direct in breaking news situations.
  • Maintain contact with news sources.
  • File away future news events for consideration.
  • Enterprise news reporting or feature stories.


  • Minimum two (2) years of on-air experience for a news station.
  • Able to find, develop, write and deliver compelling news stories.
  • Provide outstanding writing, copy editing, interviewing and audio editing skills.*
  • Possesses solid news judgement and understanding of journalistic standards.
  • Able to enunciate clearly and interpret and read news copy fluently.
  • Computer literate with the technical abilities to navigate software and operate studio equipment.
  • Understands social media platforms and has the ability to use them in a professional manner.
  • Consistently works hours required and is available for weekends, early-mornings, evenings and holidays.
  • Able to stay calm in breaking news situations and work alone or with a team to get information on the air that is factual, meaningful and clear whether scripted or ad-lib.
  • Able to multi-task while navigating stressful situations.
  • Maintain a positive and cooperative rapport with staff, management, and clients.
  • Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.

*Will be required to undergo a writing and broadcast test. May be asked to provide examples of past writing and on-air work.


  • Experience in news editing and producing, reporting and/or management.


  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Substantial physical movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction with good eye and hand coordination.
  • Lift, move, and carry up to 20 pounds on occasion.
